Again, I never said fighting against a Soul Master was surprising. What I said that being called as a Soul Master was surprising. As u may have aware of that Mental Cultivation levels are different from Qi/True essence cultivation. None of his attacks are spiritual (means related to mental attacks). What he use the most are Martial Soul Fusion and his Emperor Yin Yang technique. Plus his soul is only strong because of that Blood Furnance (which was actually Dragon Bloodline and eventually awaken as a Divine Martial Soul, Six Head Dragon initially) and his inner devil that was sealed by his teacher in his sea of consciousness after he got attacked by a Divine Gate Realm Level 5 Master (Snake Man).
